Like the moss texture on the shell, makes it very earth-like.

I'm actually surprised that it doesn't have a dragon snake for a tail in this one.

Genbu is a mythical creature, not just a fantasy creation, and is usually depicted with a white snake as a tail.

Genbu normally is a Tortoise with a Snake.

that does remind me of things

i seem to vaguely remember that snake yet the few other times ive seen a genbu, they all downplayed the snake, let alone remove it entirely

Yes.

The Digimon based on Genbu, Xuanwumon actually has a clever twist: Instead of a snake, he has a second head, which resembles a snake's head (how much depends on the artist).

its a bit hard to tell if one head is different from another. but like you said, it depend on the artist

Uw, I'd like to live on it's back, just under the cherry tree! *.* It looks soooo quiet... Hope that the turtoise is really slow, or I would be disturbed by the vibrations...

No, Genbu. Besides that, there are older Tortoises with plants on thier back then that one. For example Xuanwumon, who is based on Genbu.

The art is amazing, but I have one problem being a mythology major. Genbu's element is water not wood, Seiryuu's is wood. I am not sure if you are going with the actual mythos of the four great spirits. If you arent then alright then

:iconvalestycross:

I could have sworn it was
Seiryuu = water = Dragon
Beyaku = air = Tiger
Genbu = wood = turtle dragon
Suzaku = Fire= phoenix
and then the yellow dragon, not sure what element he represents

:iconnaes-igasu:

Byakko is metal. and the yellow dragon is earth. They are the guardian beasts. one for the four directions and one for the center of China

:iconparasytes:

Seiryu the dragon > spring and wood = east
Suzaku the bird > summer and fire = south
Byakko the tiger > autumn and metal = west
Genbu the turtle > winter and water = north

Kirin the yellow dragon represents changing seasons and earth.

I always loved the idea of a tree or 'island' being on the back of a turtle, there's something about it that seems almost, 'symbolic' to me i guess. :)
