Within the isolating darkness a slight shuffle could be heard, slithering along slowly like snakes of silk. A gauzy point of light leeks through the veils, suspended but a foot from the ground.
“What’s for dinner, mya?” A voice pronounced, dashing the silence to tiny flakes.
“Aiya! Mia, hold the lantern higher, I can’t see anything. Then we’ll talk about food.” Replied another voice with a pout.
The blur of light rose higher, its cold aura of light expanding to encompass the three young sisters that stood there.
“Aiya… No one has fallen into our traps yet…” Ima pressed a fingertip to her lips worriedly.
Fidgeting with her knife impatiently, Ami the third, silent sister nodded.
“We need to find something Ima, or Mommy won’t be pleased, myaaaa.” Mia stated, not liking that idea.
Suddenly Ami pointed straight out with her knife, into the darkness outside their little circle of light.
“Did you find something, mya??” Walking forward Mia held her lantern higher, and there, not but a few feet away lay crumpled and sad, the body of one who had fallen into a trap.
“Aiya! We caught one!” Ima rushed forward and knelt by the body, poking innocently at it with her spork. Smiling, she looked back to her sisters. “Aiyaaaa. This one is good.. we should definitely split the meat before we fry it.”
Ami approached slowly, dull knife glinting in the pale light, and all across the Plain crept forth an eerie snicker.
